Why "julianzoomedin?"

I've never looked too deeply into choosing names fittingly; usernames, catchy AIM screenames, etc. My Instagram is @juliangonda, as original as it gets...

But I was compelled to this one and compelled very quickly. I've always had a thing for photography, and it was as early as middle school for me. I borrowed my uncle's Nikon DSLR because I couldn't afford my own. The weight of it in my hands, the way the shutter sounded and felt, and the impressive quality of pictures all convinced me that I might have a thing for digital photography.

In a literal sense, julianzoomedin simply describes the physical act of capturing a photo. Whether it be through a 16-35mm wide-angle lens or a vintage, leather-cased polaroid.

Figuratively, it's the flow state that I've grown to love while I'm traveling with my camera or editing in Lightroom/Premiere Pro. This explains the dopamine molecule you see in the brand logo, encompassed by a camera. The neurochemical rush is unmatched when it comes to my creative state in these environments, and it's incredibly liberating. Time passes the quickest. The end product of a graded photo or film is rewarding to see, but the cherry on top is the story of the journey it tells.

And I've finally built the courage to put my work onto a canvas. Which, in complete honesty, is not just a way for me to share my passion and the places I’ve been, but a means to objectify the feeling of a limitless self. To objectify that rush of feel-good chemicals in our brains that are most active when we're immersed in our work--whether it involves illustrating fictional protagonists or recognizing bullish patterns at a trading desk. Ultimately I do believe we ought to unlock more ways, more opportunities for us to get to that place. I hope that in the event you do decide to take home one of my pieces of work (and I thank you, deeply, in advance), that you not only recall how beautifully serene the beaches in Maui are, but also be reminded to chase your own state of flow.

What's your activity that induces flow state—being present, optimally focused, with your mind and spirit zoomed in?

A toast to beginnings and the endless,
